When Replacement Isn't Worth It
A pin bore that has ovalled out rarely justifies scrapping the whole assembly, but it won't hold a new pin either. At Radial Engineering, we use horizontal boring in Hobart to machine worn bores, pin housings and bushing seats back to a known size, then sleeve or bush them to suit the pin going in. It's common work on excavator booms, dozer equipment, press frames, crusher components and fabricated structures where the surrounding steel is still sound. Alignment is the part that matters. A bore machined square to its original centreline goes back together and stays together; one that isn't will wear out again quickly. Badly worn bores often need welding to build them up first. How We Approach Boring Work
Every job is different, but the sequence is usually the same.

Assessment first. We measure the existing bore and check the surrounding structure before quoting, because a cracked or distorted host component changes the job entirely.
Build-up where needed. Where a bore is badly worn, we weld it up before machining, using a procedure suited to the parent material rather than a general-purpose filler.
Machining to the pin, not just the drawing. Where an oversize or worn pin is being reused, we machine and bush to suit what is actually going back in.
On site or in the workshop. Some components are easier to bore in place than to strip and transport, and we'll advise which way round makes sense for yours.
FAQs
01What causes a pin bore to wear out of round?
Most ovalling comes from side loading, a worn or under-greased bushing, or a pin that has been running loose for a while. Once the bore loses its round shape the load concentrates on a smaller contact area and wear accelerates.
02When is line boring a better option than replacing the component?
Line boring usually makes sense when the surrounding structure is sound and only the bore has worn, which covers most heavy fabricated equipment. Replacement becomes the better option when there is cracking through the parent material or the component is already at the end of its life.
03Can horizontal boring be carried out without dismantling the machine?
In many cases yes, using a portable boring bar set up on the component in place, which avoids stripping and transporting a large assembly. Whether that's practical depends on access around the bore and whether the machine can be safely supported while the work goes ahead.
