Hydraulic Cylinder Repairs in Hobart
Rebuild Before You Replace
A cylinder that's weeping past the rod seal or drifting under load rarely needs replacing outright. At Radial Engineering, we carry out hydraulic cylinder repairs in Hobart, stripping the unit down to find what actually failed rather than fitting a seal kit and hoping. Scored barrels, bent rods, worn glands and damaged seal grooves all look similar from the outside, and the fix for each is different. Once it's apart we can hone the barrel, machine or replace worn components, fit new seals and reassemble. Where a rod or gland needs re-machining, our general machining and metal fabrication handles it without sending the cylinder elsewhere. Call 0408 008 610 with the make, bore size and what the cylinder is doing.

Inside a Cylinder Rebuild
A rebuild is a sequence of checks, not just a seal change.

Strip and inspect. We dismantle the cylinder and check the barrel, rod, gland and piston individually, because the visible leak is often a symptom of wear somewhere else.
Barrel honing. Light scoring inside the barrel tears new seals quickly, so honing restores the surface finish the seals need to survive.
Rod and gland work. Bent, scored or pitted rods and worn glands get machined, repaired or replaced, depending on how far gone they are.
Reassembly and checking. Everything goes back together with new seals, and we check the cylinder before it leaves so problems surface here rather than on your machine.
FAQs
01What causes a hydraulic cylinder to leak at the rod?
Usually a worn or damaged rod seal, though the seal is often the symptom rather than the cause. A scored or pitted rod, a worn gland bush or contaminated oil will destroy a new seal quickly if they aren't addressed at the same time.
02Why does a cylinder drift down under load?
Drift generally points to worn piston seals letting oil pass from one side of the piston to the other, though a leaking control valve produces the same symptom. Isolating the cylinder from the circuit is the usual way to work out which one is at fault.
03When is a hydraulic cylinder beyond repair?
A cylinder is generally beyond economic repair when the barrel is scored deeply enough that honing won't clean it up, or when the mounting eyes are cracked or elongated. Most other damage, including bent rods and worn glands, can be put right.
